Great tutorial! I've been doing HDR for years and still didn't have a complete grasp on what some of the controls in Photomatix really affected. These are excellent tips! I do landscapes for personal work but use HDR a lot for work- architecture and interiors. These tips will really help me get more accurate interpretations of a scene as well as let me make more informed choices on artistic shots. Thanks

+f64 Academy why is it better to use the raw files directly in photomatix rather than do basic settings such as Camera profile, lens corrections, chromatic aberation, white balance first and send 16 bit tiffs to Photomatix ? Aren't those controls in Lightroom or camera raw better done on raw file first?

sweet! that is great to hear! It can be a tough program at first, but with a little guidance it gets easier. Glad I could help.

Hello, thank you for your tutorial. I was wondering, were I to want to take a hdr photo of a waterfall is it best I shoot it in raw, then out of that one raw image create the nessasary jpgs to do the hdr, by doing so I would get the water sharpish rather that blended.

I just upgraded from the basic one which was awesome since I only paid the difference, and I'm still learning it but so far it's much better because it removes chromatic abberation and lets me do more than 5 photos. Anyways I just subbed because I'm big into HDR. I follow Trey Ratcliff because his HDR is amazing.

+Vic Vinegar and I bookmarked this video because I know I'm going to forget 90% of this stuff.

Suppose, instead of taking three bracketed pictures I select one raw image and make two copies on different exposure settings (in Lightroom) and load them as three pictures in Photomatix. Will I get the same result as if I had had three separately exposed pictures at the start?
Patrick
Patrick
+Malachi O' Doherty I did that with a small 10ft waterfall and it turned out ok, but not as nice as if it were captured that way natively

+EverydayHDR Thank you very much.
f64 Academy
f64 Academy
+Malachi O' Doherty yes and no. It depends firstly on the quality og the data in the original. If the histogram is clipped anywhere on the whites or blacks it will create problem areas. It can give you similar results, but is an option I would only use in a serious pinch. I have shown this several years ago and even developed an Action to do the +2/-2 EV conversions for you: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N6vzMcclpy0

hi, if I move the strenght fader up, I get some noise. photos were taken F9, ISO 100, RAW. This is a normal thing? I'm new to it!
f64 Academy
f64 Academy
Haha, YouNoob, I like that!  Yes, that is normal.  Tone Mapping invites a noise party to your image.  If there is even a trace element of noise, it will be amplified with Tone Mapping, especially in Photomatix.  This usually can be fixed with some mild noise reduction. You can try using Merge to HDR Pro in Photoshop as it is less noise intensive.

After watching your HDR INSIDER tutorials I have made only two presets, just to help me see what direction I may want to go in. I always adjust the sliders so I can watch out for halos and keep the saturation fairly flat. As always thanks for your guidance.

Awesome to hear!  I switched to a newer PC about a month ago.  I lost all of my presets with the swap and I do not miss them one bit!  I now have one preset to help me get a baseline, I have made 2 or 3 from it, but dont use them much.  I only saved them so I could do some Batch Processing!  I love it!

+EverydayHDR Ok thanks all the same.

Sorry!  I don't sell or give out the presets simply because one preset will not work for every photo, nor be a very good baseline. Every photo series is different and requires a different take.  I have well over 150 presets, however, in the last 6 or so months I have not used a single one. I have a new motto with it.  Tone map that photo so that it is not too dark, too light, or too stylized.  Then I post process it in Photoshop with the Digital Zone System.  the results are astounding.

would you be giving out your hdr presets sir?
Varun Daniel
Varun Daniel
Yes sir, you're right :) Great tutorial though
f64 Academy
f64 Academy
Unfortunately I do not.  It is not because I do not want to give away my secrets, I do that everyday!  I do not offer presets because they are so different from image to image.   I would hate to giveaway or sell my presets and have someone use them thinking they were gold just to find out they needed to make adjustments anyway. With the dynamic range varying from image to image it is best to start from scratch with each one and make presets for certain shoots with similar lighting.

Is there a way to remove hdr effects from skin?
f64 Academy
f64 Academy
+MyWhitelye It can look great on elderly skin or men with ruffled stubble or even beards if rough is what you are going for.
MyWhitelye
MyWhitelye
No it doesn't, found that out today. Thanks I will try that.
f64 Academy
f64 Academy
Not really, the best thing to do would be to introduce one of the original exposures from the 3 or 5 shot set.  HDR doesnt look so hot on people, especially women!

Yep, the roof was one of the best parts.  My 2 year old "drove" the bus while my wife wouldn't even think of walking that far out.  What a cool concept.
